Wellbeing
Wellbeing at WOTH!
At Walton, wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do.
We believe that children and adults learn best when they feel safe, valued, and connected, and our approach is rooted in the belief that every member of our community belongs.
Our ethos and our Five Senses of Walton-ness — belonging, empowerment, success, purpose and adventure — shape every aspect of school life. We want our pupils to leave us as confident, compassionate individuals who know how to care for themselves and for others.
A Nurturing and Trauma-Informed Approach
We are proud to be a nurturing, trauma-informed school. We understand that behaviour is communication, and we work sensitively to build trust, emotional literacy, and resilience.
Our staff are trained to recognise and respond to the emotional needs of pupils with empathy and understanding. Through consistent routines, caring relationships, and restorative practice, we create a calm and supportive environment where every child feels secure and understood.
Supporting Pupil Wellbeing
Wellbeing is not an add-on — it is woven into daily school life.
We actively track and monitor pupil wellbeing through regular surveys, pupil voice, pastoral check-ins, and our safeguarding systems. This helps us identify children who may need extra support quickly and respond with appropriate care.
Our PSHE curriculum, taught through the SCARF scheme, is thoroughly embedded across the school. It teaches children about mental health, emotional wellbeing, relationships, and self-care in age-appropriate ways. These lessons are reinforced through assemblies, special events, and awareness days such as Children’s Mental Health Week, Anti-Bullying Week, and Odd Socks Day.
We also offer a rich programme of enrichment activities — from creative arts and sports to mindfulness and outdoor learning — that promote happiness, confidence, and belonging.
💬 Pupil Voice and Empowerment
We believe our children’s voices matter.
Our Wellbeing Ambassadors play an important role in shaping the wellbeing culture of the school. They listen to their peers, share ideas with staff, and help to make our school an even kinder, more inclusive place.
Regular pupil surveys, class discussions, and pupil parliament meetings give every child the chance to share their views and know they are heard.
Staff Wellbeing
We know that staff who feel valued and supported are best placed to nurture our pupils.
We are committed to protecting staff wellbeing through open communication, realistic workload expectations, and regular opportunities for professional and personal support.
Our Staff Wellbeing Lead — a qualified Senior Mental Health Lead — champions staff mental health and coordinates wellbeing initiatives across the school. Regular staff wellbeing surveys help us monitor morale, workload, and support needs, ensuring that we listen, adapt, and act on feedback.
🌈 A Community that Cares
Our school is a caring community where children, families, and staff work together to create a sense of belonging that extends beyond the classroom.
We celebrate kindness, model respect, and embrace difference — because we know that when wellbeing flourishes, everyone thrives.
“At Walton on the Hill, we don’t just teach wellbeing — we live it, every day.”
