Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
Our Inclusive Vision
At Walton on the Hill Primary School, we are proud to be an inclusive community where every child is valued, supported, and encouraged to thrive. We believe all children deserve the opportunity to reach their full potential, whatever their individual needs or abilities.
Our skilled staff work closely with families and external professionals to provide the right support for each child. We recognise that children learn in different ways and at different rates, and we design a flexible, engaging curriculum to reflect this. For some pupils, we create more personalised provision so they can access learning successfully and achieve their goals.
If you would like to find out more about our SEND provision, please contact our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) Mrs Kirsty Romero: kirstyromero@walton-on-the-hill.surrey.sch.uk
What are Special Education Needs or Disabilities?
Some children may have needs or disabilities that affect how they learn and engage at school. These may include:
- Communication and Interaction Needs
- Cognition and Learning Needs
- Social, Emotional and Mental Health Needs
- Physical and Sensory Needs
We provide support at three levels:
- Wave 1: High-quality, inclusive teaching for all children
- Wave 2: Small-group or targeted interventions led by school-based specialists
- Wave 3: Individualised support, including external agency involvement where appropriate
Our Provision Map outlines these levels of support in more detail.
Individual Learning Plan (ILP)
Children who are on the school’s SEND register have an Individual Learning Plan (ILP), created by their class teacher in collaboration with parents/carers and the SENDCo. The ILP helps to identify each child’s specific needs and set clear, achievable targets.
Each ILP includes:
- The child’s learning targets and timeframe
- Details of who will support the child and how
- Resources, strategies, and approaches to be used
- How progress will be monitored and measured
- Ways in which parents can support learning at home
ILPs are regularly reviewed and updated through meetings with parents and the child, ensuring everyone’s views are heard. Any advice from external specialists will be included in the plan to ensure a joined-up approach.
Children with a higher level of need may require an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
