Foundation Subjects and Medium Term Plans
At Walton on the Hill Primary, we are proud to offer a rich, well-planned and inspiring curriculum that nurtures curiosity, creativity and confidence. Our aim is to give every child the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to achieve highly — both academically and personally — while developing a deep sense of belonging, empowerment, purpose, success and adventure.
We teach a broad and balanced curriculum that meets and exceeds the expectations of the National Curriculum. Each subject is taught with integrity and purpose, using a blend of bespoke planning and high-quality, evidence-based schemes. Our approach ensures clear progression, strong foundations and meaningful connections between subjects, so that knowledge builds over time and learning sticks.
Science
Science at Walton encourages children to be curious, investigative and analytical. Our bespoke long- and medium-term plans ensure that children revisit and deepen scientific ideas across biology, chemistry and physics.
Science at Walton ignites children’s natural curiosity about the world and develops a deep understanding of scientific ideas through exploration, enquiry and evidence. It combines secure knowledge of key concepts with hands-on investigation, enabling pupils to think, talk and work like scientists. Learning is carefully sequenced to build understanding step by step, revisiting and connecting ideas across biology, chemistry and physics. Children are taught to ask questions, make predictions, test hypotheses, observe carefully and draw conclusions based on evidence. Rich vocabulary, meaningful contexts and high-quality resources support conceptual understanding, while strong links to real life, sustainability and the wider world ensure relevance and engagement. Above all, science teaching nurtures a lifelong sense of wonder, curiosity and confidence to explore, question and discover.
History
Our bespoke history curriculum helps children understand how people and events have shaped Britain and the wider world. Topics are sequenced chronologically to support secure historical understanding, with clear links between local, national and global history. Pupils develop skills of enquiry, interpretation and evaluation, learning to think critically about evidence and perspective. We aim to ignite curiosity and a sense of identity, helping children understand where we come from and how societies change.
Geography
Our bespoke geography curriculum inspires children to explore the world around them — from the local environment to global landscapes. Through fieldwork, map skills and thematic studies, pupils learn about place, space and human-environment interactions. We aim to develop global citizens who understand their responsibility to care for our planet and the people who share it.
Art and Design Technology
Through Kapow Primary, children experience a carefully sequenced curriculum that builds creative and technical skills. In Art, pupils explore materials, techniques and artistic traditions, developing originality and appreciation for creativity in different cultures and times. In Design and Technology, pupils learn to design, make and evaluate purposeful products. They develop resilience and creativity as they move through the design process from idea to finished piece.
Computing
Using Kapow Computing, pupils learn to be safe, confident and creative users of technology.
Our curriculum covers digital literacy, computer science and information technology, ensuring pupils understand both how computers work and how to use them responsibly. Online safety is embedded throughout, preparing pupils for a connected, digital world.
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE)
We follow the Scarf scheme of work, which provides a rich foundation for personal growth, wellbeing and relationships. Through age-appropriate, spiral learning, pupils explore themes such as physical and mental health, safety, relationships, equality and aspirations. This sits at the heart of our commitment to safeguarding, character education and emotional resilience.
Physical Education (PE)
Using Get Set for PE, we provide a broad, engaging and inclusive PE curriculum. Children develop physical competence, teamwork, and a love of sport through a wide range of activities. Lessons build confidence, fitness and enjoyment, encouraging lifelong participation and healthy lifestyles.
Music
Our music curriculum, taught through Get Set for Music, combines performance, composition and appreciation. Children experience a wide variety of musical genres and instruments, learning to listen critically, perform confidently and enjoy music as a universal language of expression. In summer 2025, the Friends of Walton-on-the-Hill purchased a full class set of djembe drums, skipping ropes and scarves, which are now being used regularly, alongside the glockenspiels, to deliver the new music scheme.
Modern Foreign Languages (French)
We teach French using Language Angels, providing a progressive, interactive curriculum that builds vocabulary, pronunciation and cultural understanding. Children develop confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing in another language, fostering curiosity and respect for other cultures.
Religious Education (RE)
RE enables pupils to explore beliefs, values and traditions in Christianity and other principal world religions.
Through discussion and reflection, children learn about diversity, respect and the moral and spiritual questions that shape our world.
RE makes a vital contribution to pupils’ personal development and understanding of global citizenship
